DailyTech and DigiTimes reports that AMD might be also providing processors for Origami UMPCs. According to Digi Times:
AMD Taiwan declined to comment on the vendor’s possible entry in the UMPC market, but said the sector still needs time to develop. High costs, lack of market adoption and overlapping functions of notebooks are issues, which are also reasons why the Tablet PC has failed, according to AMD Taiwan.
However, Intel is already not the only one providing processors for UMPCs, and Microsoft Origami specifications does not have any particular preference for the chips to run UMPC devices. So in the end it is up to manufacturers to decide what kind of processor will be used in Origami device. And some Taiwanese vendors are hinting that they migh opt for AMD Turion64 and Geode chips.
Limited battery life is one of the main drawbacks of Ultra Mobile PC and with AMD processors using 13% less power then Intel equivalents, some vendors might decide that it is a good opportunity. At least until Intel ramps up it’s Ultra Low Voltage Core Duo chip production next year.

Another major PC vendor announced it’s plans for UMPC. Raymond Foo, director, Product Marketing and Communications for Fujitsu PC Asia Pacific confirmed that Fujitsu Siemens is in discussion with Microsoft to develop Ultra-Mobile PCs. According to Digi Times:
Fujitsu is currently in talks with Microsoft for its possible launch of Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPCs), according to Foo. Unlike flat-panel computers and notebooks in general, a UMPC is considered more like a high-end PDA and their sales will hardly threaten Fujitsu’s current eight-inch notebook offerings, said Foo.
Together with Samsung Q1 UMPC, Asus also was one of the first to announce a product in this category. And although Samsung stole most of the buzz at Cebit, Asus R2H UMPC is more powerful device. The basic hardware specs are: Continue Reading »
